Incorporating demographic information into spawner–recruit analyses alters biological reference point estimates for a western Alaska salmon population

چکیده
Changes over time in age, sex, and length-at-age of returning Pacific salmon have been widely observed, suggesting concurrent declines per capita reproductive output. Thus, assessment models assuming stationary output may inaccurately estimate biological reference points that inform harvest policies. We extended age-structured state-space spawner–recruit to accommodate demographic trends fishery selectivity investigate temporal changes using Kuskokwim River Chinook (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha). illustrate observed likely reduced an additive manner, for example, including both age composition showed larger than incorporating only one trend. Translated into a yield-per-recruit algorithm, we found escapement needed maximum sustained catch has increased time, but the magnitude further depended on size-selective (i.e., increases based mesh gillnets). Compared traditional assessments, our approach acknowledges allows more complete use available data facilitates evaluating trade-offs among gear-specific

Incorporating nonlinearity into mediation analyses
BACKGROUND Mediation is an important issue considered in the behavioral, medical, and social sciences. It addresses situations where the effect of a predictor variable X on an outcome variable Y is explained to some extent by an intervening, mediator variable M. Methods for addressing mediation have been available for some time. While these methods continue to undergo refinement, the relationsh...
متن کاملIncorporating Uncertainty into Time-geographic Density Estimates
Time geography provides a rigorous mathematical framework for analysing movement patterns of mobile objects (Hagerstrand 1970, Miller 2005a). Given a set of tracking data, the fundamental elements of time geography—the space-time path and space-time prism—can be used to delimit the possible movements of an object between observed data points. This basic approach has proven useful in a number of...
متن کاملWhen Celibacy Matters: Incorporating Non-Breeders Improves Demographic Parameter Estimates
In long-lived species only a fraction of a population breeds at a given time. Non-breeders can represent more than half of adult individuals, calling in doubt the relevance of estimating demographic parameters from the sole breeders. Here we demonstrate the importance of considering observable non-breeders to estimate reliable demographic traits: survival, return, breeding, hatching and fledgin...
متن کاملIncorporating covariates into standard line transect analyses.
An implicit assumption of standard line transect methodology is that detection probabilities depend solely on the perpendicular distance of detected objects to the transect line. Heterogeneity in detection probabilities is commonly minimized using stratification, but this may be precluded by small sample sizes. We develop a general methodology which allows the effects of multiple covariates to ...
متن کاملReference-Incorporating Microwave Resonator-Based Sensors for Biological Sensing Applications
Use of microwave resonator-based sensors is a relatively new approach for the detection of biological reagents. Sensing mechanism is based on the tracking of the resonant frequency on electromagnetic resonator. Resonant frequency depends on structure geometry and material but is also affected by secondary changes in environment. Addition of a reference resonator to suppress these effects is pro...
